Patrick and Lisa were visiting during the hottest and most humid month of the year, August. During these months, there’s nothing quite like the cooling ocean breeze. So, I was happy to hear that they’d been watching “When Life Gives You Tangerines” and wanted a view of the ocean on Jeju for this shoot.
Initially, Patrick asked about the Yongmeori Coast on southwest Jeju, but I quickly suggested that it’s not a great place for a proposal. The rocks there are very low to the water, so in the case of high winds or large swells, they simply close it and his opportunity for the proposal would be gone. So, we looked at a few other coastal spots and he settled on Seopjikoji as ticking all his boxes.
One of Patrick’s other requests had been not to have too many people around, which can be a tough ask on an island where the main industry is tourism. But, with the sunset being so late in summer, most people would already have gone in for dinner by the time he arrived here. The afternoon sun on the rocks and a nice shaded area for the proposal made it a spectacular moment that felt every bit like summer while still giving them some nice, soft light to stand in and no direct sun to sweat under.
Taking my inspiration from the whimsical nature of the K-Drama they had been watching, we spent most of our time shooting back into the sun for a soft ethereal feeling. But, we don’t get a lot of days in Korea with this sort of clear sky and directional light, so I made the most of the opportunity for some more dramatic images, as well!
I hope you’ve enjoyed this look into summertime on Jeju. If you’d like to work with me for your own proposal, I’d be happy to hear from you!
