Spring Family Photos at Changdeokgung with the Geertsema Family

Dozens of times a year, I get contacted for spring family photos in Seoul and I often have to share the same information. So, in this blog, I want to share what spring is like here in Seoul while sharing these fun photos of the lovely Geertsema tribe. We had a great session with these two wonderfully courteous young people who made our morning out together such a breeze!

Spring here in Seoul roughly covers the months of March and April most years, with a little bit of an extension into February and May on occasions. As a transition season, the look and feel of the city changes almost daily and those beautiful photos of cherry blossoms you see when searching online are just a couple of days of the overall season. All of the flowers at this time of year are fleeting beauties that come and go in the blink of an eye. We even get snow as late as April some years!

This particular session was at the beginning of March and, as such, was on quite a chilly morning, especially given the cloud cover. But, our two little troopers kept their spirits up and had no time to worry about the cool air as we moved from place to place and kept the energy high. At this time of year, the only flowers we’ll see are the budding forsythias here and there. Otherwise, as you’ll see in our photos below, the trees are still completely bare.

Even on a cloudy day like this, though, our mornings are usually around 10-12 degrees with highs of between 15-20 degrees most days. The weather does have a habit of swinging quite wildly at this time of year, though, so it’s always good to bring some warmer clothes if you’re visiting from abroad.

Family Photos on a Cool Spring Morning in Seoul

As you can see in the image above and many of the images in Parts 1 and 4 of my Year in Review posts, the trees are still completely devoid of and colour at this time of year. But, that’s what makes the palaces such a wonderful option. While the parks are bare and Seoul’s buildings are as monotone as ever, the palaces shine with their colourful designs even at this time. This makes them a great option at any time of year, but especially in the winter and early spring.

Back to this family photo shoot, though. As our session progressed, it was clear that the children were ready to do something else and continue exploring their birthland. So, I asked them for a couple of ideas to wrap up the session and the images below are from them.

Hopefully, you’ve enjoyed seeing these images as much as I did taking them and have learnt a little about Seoul’s spring season along the way. Soon, I’ll be back with a post regarding the cherry blossoms and what to expect, so do follow my Instagram for that announcement. For now, have a wonderful day and do get in touch if you’d like to have your own family photos in Seoul!
