Sussan and her family got a fantastic winter day for their photoshoot. It’s not often we see snow in Seoul and even less often that it sticks around long enough for us to work with. On this day, though, we had the triple bonus of residual snow, overcast light, and positive temperatures! It really couldn’t have been better for a family from the sunburnt land!
We kicked our session off with the classic “everyone looking at the camera” frame to make sure we got that before the cold got under the children’s skins. Then, we kicked things into high gear, flip-flopping between static and moving shots to keep our bodies warm. Everyone was armed with pocket warmers, as well, so we could keep our fingers warm between shots.
We’d also had several very cold days in the leadup to this session, so the little pond at Gyeongbokgung was also partially frozen over, making for yet another shot we can’t get very often here.
Keeping the session moving, we moved up to the unpainted section at the back of the palace for a different feeling to the images. It’s also one of the only spots in Gyeongbokgung that we can get seated shots, as well. So we made the most of that opportunity.
For our final few shots, we went back down to the colourful sections and had some fun with the last of the powdery snow we could find. Snow it Seoul tends to either get trampled into a muddy mess or compacted into ice sheets very quickly, so we were happy to find some that we could make into snowballs. Being the last shot of the session, the childrens’ hands would only be freezing for a couple of minutes before they could head inside and warm up, too!
And with that, we wrapped up the session and parted ways! Winter does take a little more work than other seasons here, but if you’re open to braving the cold, get in touch! It’s always fun to create some unique images in the colder months.
