Carrying on from my last post, I wanted to share another sunrise proposal on Jeju Island. A question I often get with surprise proposals is “How can we make it as private as possible?” The simple answers to this are timing and location.
As a general rule, Koreans, especially when on holiday, are not early risers. Case in point, coffee shops in Seoul don’t tend to open before 10am! So, if you’re willing to get up early, peace and solitude can be found!
When Evan first reached out, we’d been discussing pink muhly grass as an option for his proposal, but that didn’t eventuate as the long summer meant that the grass didn’t change colour until a full four weeks later than usual.
We then skipped through a few different options and Evan’s partner, Lina actually pointed out Seopjikoji while they were discussing their trip. She said she loved it and wanted to watch the sunrise from there. That statement basically made our decision for us and meant we had the best chance possible of having nobody around.
The weather cooperated that day, and we got an absolutely stunning sunrise for the couple to enjoy at their special moment. As all good sunrise viewers, though, they arrived early to make sure they wouldn’t miss it. Of course, I was there waiting and Evan texted me to ask if he should propose before the sunrise. “Absolutely,” I sent back, “the soft glow of dawn is gorgeous today.”
The moment they arrived, Evan picked up his flowers from where I had placed them and I sprung into action. Lina requested a quick retake of the proposal to have herself faced the way she preferred, so we quickly did that and then I gave them a moment to watch the sunrise together and talk about what just happened. I made sure to grab the shot above so they’d have a record of the moment it happened.
Once the sun was up, the landscape changed dramatically and everything was washed in a warm glow. We were racing against time to work with that beautiful morning light before it got too harsh and we all needed a coffee! We made a few shots at Seopjikoji before moving over to the aquarium nearby. They have a lovely garden and at this time of the morning it is empty and usable for photos.
I hope you guys have enjoyed following along with this beautiful proposal. Please reach out if you’re interested in having your own proposal photographed. Also, do follow me on Instagram for more!
